Oregon Department of Corrections discloses death of man in custody

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) –The Department of Corrections disclosed Friday that a 71-year-old man died while in custody at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.

David Dietrich was taken to the infirmary and placed on hospice care before passing away the morning of March 27, officials said. The State Medical Examiner has yet to determine the cause of death.

He had been in custody since July 12, 2007, with a projected release date of March 13, 2032.

The Department of Corrections is in charge of nearly 12,000 men and women confined in 12 institutions throughout the state.
