In more than a decade of chamber of commerce leadership across multiple communities, Jeff Griffin can’t remember one business ever holding three ribbon cuttings in one week.
“That’s a milestone,” said Griffin, president and CEO of the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce.
But that’s what’s on the schedule this week for Circle K Stores Inc., which officially opened new locations across Sioux Falls at:
They’re among the 20 stores in the Sioux Falls area and the more than 14,200 Circle K stores worldwide.
“Food, fuel and people are our main focuses,” said district manager Ryan Ketterling, who is based in Sioux Falls and has a 15-year history with the chain of convenience stores.
They transitioned from locally owned Gas Stop locations to Holiday Stationstores and were acquired by Canada-based Alimentation Couche-Tard more than five years ago. That’s the parent company shared by Holiday and Circle K. The rebrand to Circle K in Sioux Falls began about three years ago.
Since then, multiple new locations such as the ones this week have been added, and more are planned.
The company has submitted building plans for C-stores at 5601 E. 57th St., near 57th and Veterans Parkway in the Harvest Creek neighborhood, as well as 4811 E. Arrowhead Parkway, just east of Sycamore Avenue.
Store footprints range from 4,000 to 6,000 square feet and sometimes include a car wash, Ketterling said.
From the time construction starts, it’s generally less than six months before opening.
In choosing locations, “there’s a lot of thought that goes into it,” he said. “A lot has to do with the amount of rooftops in the area, the amount of traffic driving by, the amount of impact we can have in the neighborhood, and we’re always looking for being on the best corner.”
At Tuesday’s west-side ribbon cutting, the company donated $1,000 to the Disabled American Veterans nonprofit; on Wednesday, it was Sioux Falls Christian Schools.
“It’s not every national brand that wants to support their local chamber of commerce,” Griffin said, adding that when convenience stores go into communities that aren’t growing, “they cannibalize each other,” but because Sioux Falls is expanding in all directions, including the broader metro area, “we have companies like Circle K willing to do the market research to put stores where they need to go.”
Circle K carries an assortment of hot and cold grab-and-go food and beverages, along with grocery and staple items. It’s known for its cookies and partners locally with Mr. Donuts, Ketterling said.
The Too Good To Go app, which launched recently in Sioux Falls, also is proving popular. Customers sign up to retrieve a surprise bag containing $12 of products for $4.
“They might get a cold sandwich, they might get a yogurt, they might get a wrap, they might get a drink or bag of chips. It all depends on what the store has that’s going to expire in the next day or two,” Ketterling said.
He oversees seven stores, and most are producing 10 to 15 bags daily. They sell out, so sign up early, he said.
“Out of the top 20 stores in the entire company, nine of the (top) stores in the Too Good to Go program are in Sioux Falls,” he said.
As Circle K scales up in Sioux Falls, “hiring is a challenge,” Ketterling added. “We are always looking for good quality people that want to grow their career and grow with a company that’s willing to grow with them and is interested in developing them.”
