White Sox DFA Oscar Colás, claim switch-hitting outfielder off waivers from Rockies

CHICAGO (WGN) — Before their first workout of the year at Rate Field Wednesday afternoon, the Chicago White Sox designated one-time top prospect Oscar Colás for assignment and made more than a half-dozen other moves to whittle down their roster ahead of Opening Day.

Colás, the South Siders’ No. 2 prospect in 2022 and 2023 according to mlb.com, has a -1.4 career WAR in 88 games across two MLB seasons, where he posted a slash line of .223/.271/.309 with five home runs and 23 RBI.

Alongside DFA’ing Colás, the White Sox claimed switch-hitting outfielder Greg Jones off waivers from the Colorado Rockies.

Jones, 27, spent most of the 2024 season with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes in the Rockies minor league system. He batted .269/.346/.460 with 17 doubles, 16 home runs, 42 RBI, 78 runs scored and 46 stolen bases in 86 games.

In the field, Jones offers positional versatility outside of playing in the outfield. While he appeared in 62 games in center field, he also played 14 games at shortstop and eight at second base with the Isotopes.

Jones made his Major League Debut and played in limited fashion in 2024. From June 6-17, he went 1-5 with a home run, RBI and run scored in five games.

The South Siders also reassigned five players to minor league camp: Bobby Dalbec, Tristan Gray, James Karinchak, Chase Meidroth and Steven Wilson.

Meidroth, one of the three prospects acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade last year, was in contention for the starting gig at shortstop heading into spring training before White Sox manager Will Venable told him he would start the year with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights earlier this week.

The South Siders also optioned right-handed pitcher Justin Anderson to Triple-A Wednesday.

With the moves, the White Sox have 31 players remaining in camp: 15 pitchers, two catchers, eight infielders and six outfielders. The Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
