Warm with clear skies in Utah ahead of potential ‘small surge’ of moisture

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Wednesday, Utah! It was a comfy start to the day with mostly clear skies. A strong ridge of high pressure is controlling the weather pattern and will continue to keep things pretty warm and overall calm across the region.

A small surge of moisture on the backside of high pressure could send a few isolated showers and rumbles across our central mountains Wednesday afternoon and early evening. Any rainfall will be fairly isolated but is certainly not out of the question. The high clouds could affect temperature trends a bit later today.

Highs will warm to around 80° for SLC, Wednesday and around 90° for St. George. These forecast numbers would potentially break old daytime record highs. Also, if we hit these numbers, this would be the earliest we’ve ever hit them in the year.

The pattern does begin to break down as we enter the second half of the week. An upper-level low arrives Thursday night into Friday bringing a return to more average daytime highs and even a chance for some scattered precipitation as we move into the weekend time frame.

A few scattered showers could develop across northern Utah, with mountain snow showers developing. Rain showers may briefly become more widespread on Saturday, before fading with a period of light accumulating snow for the mountains.

We will likely see a brief break in action on Sunday with just a slight chance for any precipitation before a slightly stronger system enters the picture on Monday and Tuesday bringing another chance for valley rain and mountain snow.

This system could tug down enough cold air by Tuesday night to even bring a chance of flakes to the valleys, but this would not amount to much in the valleys.

Temperatures during this time will drop into the 50s for highs across northern Utah and upper 60s and low 70s for southern Utah.

The pattern could remain fairly active through the first week of April.

Stay tuned!
