New bill proposed to help families of fallen Pennsylvania first responders

(WHTM) — At the State Capitol, there’s a push to better help families of fallen first responders.

Lawmakers are introducing “Bryan’s Law,” which would provide death benefits to families of first responders who had post-traumatic stress and died by suicide.

The legislation is inspired by State Trooper Bryan Gray, who took his life last year. His wife says when that happened she and her children were left with no health insurance and no line-of-duty death benefits.

“I stand here now to say that the law is incomplete,” said Emily Gray. “We know and have access to so much data to prove that PTSD-related injuries, including suicide, are in fact work-related deaths and Bryan’s death should be classified as such.”

The bill is based on the Federal Public Safety Officer Support Act.
