I-15 reopens after standoff with ‘uncooperative’ driver in Nephi, suspect in custody

NEPHI, Utah (ABC4) — I-15 in Nephi has reopened after a standoff with an “uncooperative” driver accused of fleeing from a traffic stop and crashing.

John Gleason with the with the Utah Department of Transportation said he believes the suspect was taken into custody by law enforcement. Lt. Cam Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol confirmed the suspect is in custody.

Gleason said the left lane of northbound I-15 will remain closed at mile marker 221 for the investigation.

Original story — ALERT: I-15 shut down after driver crashes in Nephi, is ‘uncooperative’ with UHP

NEPHI, Utah (ABC4) — I-15 is closed in both directions in Nephi after a driver reportedly crashed after fleeing from an attempted traffic stop.

Lt. Cam Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol told ABC4.com that a trooper attempted a traffic stop near mile marker 217, but the vehicle fled. The driver later crashed at mile marker 222 and was said to be “uncooperative.”

Officials were last said to be working to convince the driver to get out of the vehicle, according to UHP.

Both directions of traffic are closed, and traffic is being diverted. Southbound traffic is being diverted at mile marker 222, and northbound traffic is being diverted off at 207, Roden said.

According to the Utah Department of Transportation Traffic website, the incident began at around 4:25 p.m. on Wednesday. In an online alert, UDOT described the situation as a “police incident.”
