Hill AFB’s Child Development Center temporarily closes

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah (ABC4) — Hill Air Force Base has said it will be temporarily closing the east facility of its Child Development Center (CDC). This comes weeks after Hill AFB cancelled child care for 31 families.

According to a Hill Air Force Base spokesperson, the 31 families were notified on March 12 that their children would be disenrolled from the Child Development Center effective March 21.

“CDCs traditionally face high turnover, and several recent departures in conjunction with the hiring freeze have reduced the number of supervisors and trainers available. Maintaining two open CDCs at current personnel levels would pose an unacceptable risk to the 200 children who remain in care at Hill AFB,” the spokesperson added.

Hill AFB leaders said they are looking at all options to provide quality childcare options while the facility remains closed.

The Air Force now has an exemption to hire new CDC staff members. A spokesperson for Hill AFB also said the hiring, onboarding, and training processes will take time, and there is no set date for when the East facility will reopen.
