According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 1800 block of North Rural Street around 10:56 p.m. to investigate a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult female with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds inside a residence.
The woman was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and later died from her injuries. The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified her as 29-year-old Kia M. Gooch and ruled her death a homicide.
IMPD detained an adult male person of interest at the scene. Police are still trying to determine what relationship, if any, the person of interest and victim had with each other. Police transported the person of interest to the IMPD Homicide Office for questioning.
In a Tuesday morning update, IMPD said it had released the individual pending further investigation. Police made the decision after consulting with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain in question.
“It is unknown at this time if this incident is domestic related, family related, any kind of disturbance–all of that is way too soon to know,” said Capt. John Arvin with IMPD.
Arvin said detectives were investigating several possibilities, including an accidental shooting, a break-in or a domestic-related incident. He said there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Police confirmed that the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency and the Marion County Coroner’s Office are assisting detectives with their investigation.
