Crystal Nelson is more than a teacher who executes a lesson plan day after day. This job is personal to her. She teaches students with moderate intellectual disabilities and she treats them like family.
“Just trying to see what my child, if it was my child, what would I teach my child?”,Nelson says. “I show love towards them, I love them. They’re my kids when they’re here, and then I send them home to their real parents.”
There are no A’s, B’s, or C’s in here. Just a teacher helping each child make progress.
“It’s life skills. It’s what they can do. Because I can’t put them on a scale as a general ed. student. I have to assess them individually.”
When we stopped by those life skills included something they’ll use long after they leave Belair Middle.
“They need to know how much money they’re spending, how much money they’re going to get back. Because we don’t want anyone to take advantage of them.”
Crystal Nelson. Helping her school family take the steps they need to succeed in the real world.
“I want to see them grow,” she says. “I really do. When they leave me, I want to know how well they’re doing in everyday life and see what kind of impact I had on them overall.”
