Advocates push for raising minimum wage for school employees

(WHTM) — Advocates are pushing state lawmakers to help give school support staff a living wage.

The Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) rallied for school employees who are not teachers to get at least $20 per hour. This includes bus drivers, cafeteria workers, secretaries, and others.

“$20 is the minimum in the lowest economies of the state,” said Aaron Chapin, the President of the PSEA. “There are some areas in the state where $20 isn’t even close to enough money, but we need to start somewhere. $20 is where we believe we need to start this conversation.”

The state’s minimum wage is $7.25 and it hasn’t changed in 19 years.
