1 injured, bus driver cited after school bus rear-ends pickup truck in Tooele

TOOELE, Utah (ABC4) — The driver of a pickup truck was taken to a local hospital after being rear-ended by a school bus on Tuesday.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified only as a 46-year-old man from West Valley City, was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The driver of the school bus received a citation at the scene for following too closely, according to the Tooele City Police Department.

The bus had 54 “elementary-aged children” and 16 adults onboard at the time of the crash. Two students were evaluated by medical professionals at the scene but were later released, police said in a

press release.

Crews were dispatched to the 725 N Main Street at around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The bus was traveling south on Main Street after a field trip to the zoo.

The truck, a white F-150, was also traveling south, and officials said the driver had stopped for a pedestrian that was crossing Main Street.

“The school bus ran into the back of the F-150,” police said. “Pieces of metal that had been in the back of the F-150 made contact with the front windshield of the school bus.”

Officials said the driver of the bus was not injured by the debris hitting the windshield. Aside from the truck driver and two students, no other injuries were reported.

There is no further information at this time.
