Gov. Andy Beshear announced the signing of House Bill 15, a piece of legislation that lowers the age for an instructional permit from 16 to 15, on Tuesday, March 25.
“To all the 15-year-olds out there, drive safe,” Beshear said in a video announcement, nodding to his children’s push for him to sign the bill.
House Bill 15 places Kentucky in line with 23 other states where similar bills were signed into law.
According to the bill, young drivers will still need to pass a written test, a vision test, and complete a driving hours log. Lawmakers argued that an extra year under a driver’s belt would better prepare learners to get their full driver’s license at the age of 16.
“I signed this bill knowing it will help working families better juggle all of life’s activities. I may have gotten pressure from Will and Lila,” Beshear said.
