17-year-old driver dead after crashing into parked semi-truck trailer, passenger in critical condition

MIDVALE, Utah (ABC4) — A 17-year-old driver is dead after crashing into a parked semi-truck on Saturday afternoon, according to the Unified Police Department.

The teenager — identified only as a student at Hillcrest High School — was driving westbound on Fort Union Blvd with another teenager in the car on Saturday afternoon.

According to the initial investigation, UPD said it appears that the driver “swerved to miss another vehicle and lost control on the wet roads,” after which the teenager’s SUV crashed into a parked semi-truck trailer.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a 19-year-old, was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition, according to officials.

“The Unified Police Department extends their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” UPD said in a press release.

Additional details about what may have led to the crash were not immediately shared by officials. There is no further information at this time.
