Man dead after boat capsizes on Lake Michigan

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – A man died Friday in East Chicago after a boat capsized on Lake Michigan.

The Lake County, Indiana Sheriff’s Office said at around 1:30 p.m. Friday, crews were sent to the area near the steel mill in East Chicago after receiving a call saying a boat had flipped over on Lake Michigan.

When crews arrived, they were told a 73-year-old man was unaccounted for. That man was later found dead the water. Another man involved made it to shore and was taken to an area hospital, according to investigators.

Authorities believe the men went fishing earlier Friday morning when the boat capsized and said the high winds and rough waves on the lake are creating a dangerous situation, especially for small watercraft.

No other information was released.
