CHICAGO — Felony charges have been filed against a Chicago man in connection with a shooting that left one child dead and another injured on the South Side on Thursday afternoon.

According to Chicago police, 32-year-old Derrick Taylor, who resides in the same area where the shooting occurred, in Grand Crossing, has been charged with one count of causing endangerment or death to a child and one count of possession of a weapon by a felon.

Taylor’s charges stem from his alleged role in a shooting that unfolded around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in the 1400 block of East 71st Street.

Officers said in the shooting, which occurred inside a home in the area, an 8-year-old boy suffered a fatal gunshot wound and a 5-year-old boy was injured.

The victim killed has since been identified as 8-year-old Josiah Hooker.

Authorities have not provided updates on the condition of the second child involved.

Specific details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but neighbors in the area said they witnessed a postal worker performing CPR on the older child on the front porch of the home following the incident.

Taylor was taken into custody shortly after the shooting. He is set to appear in court on Saturday for a detention hearing.

Authorities did not provide a booking photo for Taylor.
