ST. ANTHONY – Several schools in Fremont County School District 215 dismissed class early Thursday due to weather concerns.

In an email to parents around noon, District Superintendent Brandon Farris said, “our students in NORTH schools will bus home today at 12:30 p.m.”

No one was available for comment at the district office, but Fremont County Emergency Management posted on Facebook that “North Fremont Jr. High, High School and Ashton Elementary will be released at (sic) 1230.”

“Our SOUTH schools will remain on our regular bus schedule,” Farris wrote.

Locals were greeted to freshly fallen snow when they woke up Thursday morning. Though today is the first day of spring, winter weather has been a factor in several crashes in Fremont County.

Fremont County Sheriff’s Office posted a photo of a vehicle on its side sometime before 11 a.m.

“We were told it’s the first day of Spring … somewhere,” the post says. “Slow down and travel safe!”

Most of the Interstate 15-U.S. Highway 20 corridor in eastern Idaho is under a wind advisory, according to the National Weather Service in Pocatello.

The advisory went into effect at 10 a.m. and will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday night.

Forecasters say southwest winds between 25 and 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected.

Drivers are urged to use caution as they’re out and about.

“Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution,” the NWS says on its website. “Secure outdoor objects.”

Eastern Lemhi County is also under a winter weather advisory from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Saturday. Areas near Salmon and Challis could get up to an inch of snow with wind gusts up to 35 mph. Heavy snowfall is expected in areas above 4,000 feet.

“Winter traveling conditions,” according to the NWS. “For MINOR impacts from snow, expect a few inconveniences to normal activities. Use caution while driving.”
