STEPHENSVILLE, La. (
KLFY)- A potential merge is in the works to make Lower St. Martin Parish a part of St. Mary Parish.
This comes after the idea was discussed at the recent St. Martin and St. Mary council meetings. At the St. Mary council meeting on March 10, St. Mary Parish President Sam Jones revealed to the council that St. Martin Parish President Pete Delcambre expressed the idea to him.
It was then discussed at Tuesday evening’s St. Martin Parish council meeting, where residents voiced their concerns on how the annexation would affect them. Carroll Angelle, a resident in Stephensville, attended Tuesday’s evening’s St. Martin Parish council meeting, and spoke against the merge.
“We are here in Stephensville, we are not going anywhere, we’re not going to St. Mary Parish, we’re not going to Assumption Parish, we’re staying with St. Martin Parish,” said Angelle.
According to St. Mary Parish President Jones, it would take a two-thirds vote from St. Martin and St. Mary, if the annexation is placed on a ballot. However, Angelle said he believes it won’t make it on to a ballot.
“I don’t think it’s going to be brought up to a vote because the St. Martin Parish Council has to put it on the agenda and it’s not going to be there, so its dead, its dead in the water,” said Angelle.
Angelle also said the tax money should go towards improving Stephensville and Belle River.
“In all of the cities, Breaux Bridge, St. Martinville, Cecilia, a lot of taxes come in, all royalties come in, it goes to the St. Martin Parish Council, let’s take some of that money and help build our roads and fix everything up, clean our ditches,” she said.
A decision has not yet been made on whether or not the annexation will be placed on a ballot.
St. Mary Parish President Sam Jones tells News 10 a statement will be made at the next council meeting regarding the annexation.
