Higher temperatures expected following weak storm system this weekend

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Thursday, Utah! The Spring Equinox occurred at 3:01 a.m. Thursday morning around Utah. We kicked the day off with lots of cloud cover and chilly temps, but a good bit warmer than where we began on our Wednesday morning.

A weak storm system is grazing us to the north bringing the extra clouds and a few isolated mountain snow showers. We could see an isolated flurry or sprinkle pass through the valleys this afternoon, but most of us will likely remain on the dry side.

High pressure briefly builds back in over the state Friday, but clouds will be increasing throughout the day.

Our next weather maker arrives Friday night into Saturday bringing another round of precipitation for the northern half of Utah. Based on the latest thermal profile, it’s looking like this will be a valley rain event and mountain snow event. Looks like between a .10″ -0.25 of liquid precipitation possible with this system for the valleys, with about 2-6″ of snow for the higher terrain. Overall, these storms will not pack the punch of our past few juicy storm systems.  

After Saturday, we will dry out for our Sunday with the return of the sunshine. The sunshine really expands across the area next week. A strong ridge of high pressure builds in allowing for sinking air, and things to heat up in a big way. Southern Utah could be in the mid to upper 80s by the middle of next week, with low to mid-70s likely along the Wasatch Front.
