Crawfish supply rises, prices drop before third weekend of Lent

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — After a few weeks of limited crawfish availability, the catch has seen an increase this week, and prices have responded accordingly.

According to The Crawfish App, live crawfish are currently averaging $3.89 per pound, which is about 10 cents less than last weekend, marking a slight dip just in time for the third weekend of Lent.

“Crawfish farmers are telling us the supply is up this week which lowered prices at the dock by .25 cents per pound,” said Laney King, co-founder of The Crawfish App, “But at the retail level (what crawfish consumers pay), average live crawfish prices are down by only about .10 cents per pound. We suspect this is due to the strong demand from consumers at this time.”

The price has also fallen for those craving boiled crawfish, though by a smaller margin. The average price for boiled crawfish at retail is now $6.33 per pound, down 12 cents from the previous week.

With beautiful weather expected this weekend, King predicts the crawfish supply will continue to surge, and prices could fall even further in the coming week.

“We expect to see a continued surge in the supply of crawfish, and predict prices will continue to come down next week,” said King.
