8-year-old boy killed, 5-year-old injured in South Side shooting

CHICAGO — A child was killed and another was injured in a shooting on the city’s South Side on Thursday afternoon.

Chicago police said the shooting unfolded just before 5:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of East 71st Street in Grand Crossing.

According to police, an 8-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy were both injured in the shooting.

The 8-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the left side of his head and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The 5-year-old suffered a graze wound to his head and was taken to the hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

Officials have not yet identified the victim and it is unclear what led to the shooting.

An investigation is now underway.
