The Department of Justice said that Marvin Upton, 58, was sentenced to two years and three months in prison along with three years of supervised release.
Upton, the former pastor at Crofton Pentecostal Church, was convicted on three counts of bank fraud and three counts of filing false tax returns, according to the DOJ.
From 2013 to 2016, court documents showed that Upton scammed one of his elderly parishioners who had dementia. He also submitted numerous false tax returns that omitted income from his fraud.
The DOJ confirmed that Upton is also required to pay back $500,000 to the late church member’s estate as well as more than $220,000 to the IRS.
