“What we’re seeing is a growth in applicants,” said Jeanette M. Nuñez, interim president of FIU. “We have a lot more people applying and we’re really proud of that. We’re expecting the admissions rate to be about 41% this year.”
As of the fall 2024 semester, the university enrolled 48,624 degree-seeking students, including 44,045 undergraduates, marking an increase over the previous year. That number doesn’t include dual enrollment or non-degree-seeking students, which brings the total closer to 55,000. FIU’s First Time in College applications have also seen a significant boost, rising by 29.8% for the summer 2024, fall 2024, and spring 2025 terms compared to the year prior.
“We welcomed a huge freshman class last fall, and we expect that trend will continue,” Mrs. Nuñez said. The surge in applications, combined with a projected admissions rate of about 41% for this year, underscores the growing demand for FIU’s academic offerings.
In particular, several undergraduate programs have had a notable rise in enrollment, including computer science, biology, finance, cybersecurity, accounting, sports and exercise. Graduate programs, such as special education, law, nursing, psychology, accounting and early childhood education, have also grown.
However, while freshman enrollment and applications have risen, FIU has seen fewer transfer students. “As you look at the growth in applications and in the students that are applying to four-year universities versus other routes, we’ve actually seen a downward trend in some of our transfer students,” Mrs. Nuñez said.
She explained that the university is analyzing pathways from the college system to FIU to ensure students have an excellent experience, regardless of their route to the university. “We’re always looking for ways to enhance whatever pathway you get to come to FIU,” she said. “We want to make sure that experience is excellent.”
