LAFAYETTE, La (
KLFY) —
Second Harvest Food Bank and
United Way of Acadiana begin the construction on a non-profit grocery store to combat Lafayette’s food deserts and improve access to nutritious food on Lafayette’s Northside.
The non-profit store would be called Makin’ Groceries Store and would be located at 215 East Pinhook Rd. The store is expected to open later this year where it will continue to improve accessibility for affordable healthy food for local residents and end hunger for those in need in Acadiana.
“Access to healthy, affordable food is a fundamental right, yet many face barriers stemming from poverty, food deserts, and limited nutrition education. The Makin’ Groceries Store is a direct response to these challenges and will be a hub for nourishment, empowerment, and positive change,” says Paul Scelfo, Chief Regional Officer at Second Harvest Food Bank.
Scelfo continued to state his appreciation for the partnership with United Way of Acadiana and their initiative to continue addressing the food challenges Lafayette’s Northside faces. Through funding from the Lafayette Initiative for Food Equity, a food program created by United Way of Acadiana, the food bank was able to turn the hope of a non-profit grocery store on Lafayette’s Northside into a reality.
The Makin’ Groceries Store will build on the success of the Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market, the food bank’s grocery store on wheels that has delivered fresh, affordable food and health services neighborhoods across the region. The Makin’ Groceries Store will be another innovative solution to bring more nutritious food, education, support, and community collaboration.
For those interested in supporting the future of Makin’ Groceries Store or any other food access initiatives they are asked to call 337-224-6308.
