Clovis unified students visit farm at Clovis East

CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Kindergarteners and first-grade students got to visit the farm to learn about the importance of agriculture at Clovis East High School. 

“We got to pet baby goats, and we got to pet a guinea pig,” a Clovis Unified student said. 

Clovis Unified kindergarteners and first graders are exploring the world of agriculture.

“It was my first time around farm animals,” a Clovis Unified student said. 

Agriculture Department Chair at Clovis East Jennifer Knight says the Spring Agriculture Fair is run by high school students to teach younger generations about farm life.

“This is their chance to teach the future generations about the importance of AG and all the different career opportunities that, you know, they might be able to think about when they grow up,” Knight said. 

She says this event gives kids opportunities to hear and see what they learn about in the classroom, with educational and engaging activities, from conservation games to learning about plants.

“When they learn about science in school, they can see how that’s applied to something where they’re actually growing food for their families, are producing animals that will either provide companionship or food for us as well,” Knight said. 

Clovis FFA President Jaliyah Jones enjoyed showing young students the significance of farming.

“It’s important that they know that we need animals for food, we need plans for our veggies, we need everything just to be able to have the world how it works,” Jones said.  

On Saturday, the Clovis FFA will host 500 students competing in seven Ag contests at Clovis East.
