ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Abilene Parks & Recreation Board voted to approve an arboretum at Lake Kirby Park.

The arboretum will feature new trees that change color in the fall and will have two six-foot-wide trails, one winding through the trees and the other crossing the park’s unmaintained area. Additionally, the park will feature new picnic tables and walking trails that connect to the existing informal trails.

“People can come here. Maybe it’s game day, so they can picnic till they’re waiting for their children’s time up on the ball diamond. Or they can come here and picnic, then come out, walk the trails, and so forth,” Mitch Wright from Friends of Kirby said.

Private donations provided $40,000 for projects, and the plan to proceed includes fundraising for the rest of the projects.

Estimates say the project will cost about $100,000.
