Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens said Xavier Gray was sentenced to 20 years for manslaughter and 10 years for aggravated assault, with both sentences to run consecutively.
The shooting occurred
Detectives discovered that Gray and three other men, who were homeless, became involved in a fight following a dispute at Farish Street Park. According to Owens, Gray fired multiple shots at Newsome with a 12-gauge shotgun, killing him at the scene. He then assaulted the other two victims by shooting one in the abdomen and the other in his right leg.
After fleeing the scene, Gray was eventually captured.
