Homes damaged, destroyed in Lower Ninth Ward fire

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Crews with the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a fire in the Lower Ninth Ward that destroyed three homes on Tuesday, March 18.

The NOFD reported that crews responded to the 1000 block of Charbonnet Street around 4:19 p.m., where they found an unoccupied home almost fully engulfed in flames.

NOFD officials said wind caused the fire to spread to the homes on the right and left of the home where the fire started.

NOFD crews said two people were able to escape safely from the home on the right; however, three dogs inside the home died.

NOFD officials said a man safely escaped the home on the left, which “received severe enough fire damage to make it uninhabitable.”

The NOFD reported that two exposures on Lamanche Street behind the house where the fire started also suffered significant damage.

According to the NOFD, the back outside wall and roof of one of the homes on Lamanche Street experienced radiant heat damage. The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Crews said a couple safely escaped the second home on Lamanche Street; however, the home was deemed uninhabitable.

NOFD officials said 18 fire units carrying 50 firefighters along with crews from the St. Bernard Parish Fire Department were used to extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Red Cross was asked to help residents who have been displaced. No people were injured.
