Road closures in effect in eastern Idaho amid wind and winter weather advisories

IDAHO FALLS – As windy conditions continue for parts of eastern Idaho Sunday, the National Weather Service in Pocatello is issuing a winter weather advisory for other parts of the region.

The advisory remains into effect until 8 p.m., according to the agency’s website,

and will go into effect again from 6 a.m. Monday to noon on Tuesday.

Areas of impact include Dubois, Driggs, Jackson, Palisades, Swan Valley and surrounding communities.

Similarly, a winter storm warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for Island Park, Sun Valley, Ketchum, and Stanley.

Those affected by the winter weather advisory can expect up to two inches of snow and wind gusts as high as 55 mph.

“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage as well as create very low visibilities from blowing and drifting snow,” the NWS says.

Heavy snow and wind gusts up to 50 mph are likely in areas under a winter storm warning.

As of 3 p.m. Sunday, Fremont County Emergency Management reports U.S. Highway 20 from Ashton to the Montana state line is closed due to reduced visibility as a result of blowing and drifting snow.

ID Highway 87, a nine-mile stretch of road in Fremont County that connects with Highway 20 in Island Park, is also closed.

Meteorologists are urging those who are traveling to slow down and use caution while traveling.

“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the NWS says on its website.
