This Week in Louisiana Politics: Gulf of America, March 29 election and execution trial

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana’s first execution in nearly 15 years was put on hold by a federal judge in the state’s Middle District Court.

Jessie Hoffman was scheduled to be executed by nitrogen, but a judge granted his request for a stay under the Eighth Amendment. The ruling delayed the execution until after a trial takes place, but Hoffman is now scheduled to be executed on Tuesday after a recent court ruling.

Very soon, Louisiana students will need to learn a new name for the body of water off the state’s coast. The state Department of Education has approved a measure to call it the Gulf of America, though it is internationally known as the Gulf of Mexico.
