Archbishop Hannan beats Archbishop Shaw 59-55, wins Division II Select Championship

LAKE CHARLES (WGNO) – The cliché “it’s tough to beat a team three times,” was the perfect prologue for the Division II Select State Championship game. Archbishop Shaw beat Archbishop Hannan in both of their regular season contests.

However, the margin of victory was 11 total points, between the two contests, and the Hawks pulled the Eagles into a mobbing Saturday afternoon.

Hannan was up four points late in the first quarter, but Eagles’ guard Allen Shaw’s buzzer-beating three pointer cut the Hawks lead to one point, 15-14. Hannan began to pull away in the second quarter though.

The Hawks were only up one point with about a minute until halftime, but senior Drew Timmons’ put-back slam helped Hannan outscore Shaw 7-2 to end the half. The Hawks took a 30-24 advantage into the break.

The third quarter was where the madness began. Timmons continued to attack the glass, and the Navy signee’s put back layup in the third capped off a 19-0 Hawks run to begin the period. Then, the Eagles took flight. Khalil Awogboro’s three-pointer late in the period highlighted Shaw’s 14-0, and the game was tied 41-41 heading into the fourth.

Hannan leaned on its senior leader in the fourth though, and Timmons’ gest a three-point play, after banking in a layup and drawing a foul. The Hawks would go up six points and hang on for the victory.

Archbishop Hannan beat Archbishop Shaw 59-55 to claim its second state championship in four years.

“St. Michaels pushed us. Vandebilt Catholic pushed us. Peabody really pushed us. They had weathered storms to get here and never stopped believing in themselves. Game going back and forth, and Shaw would take the lead. They didn’t stop believing in themselves,” Hannan head coach Errol Gauff said.
