The sort of event typically found more in places like New York City is coming to Sioux Falls for four hours today — offering the chance to shop at a “plush bakery.”
The popular Jellycat characters typically are carried as plush toys at Child’s Play Toys, 233 S. Phillips Ave.
But until 2 p.m. today, the store also is hosting a “Jellycat Cafe” with plush pancakes, pickles, waffles, tarts, bagels, cinnamon buns, pretzels and more.
Customers are invited for photo-ops and shopping, while supplies last. The pancake character appeared on track to sell out first based on the first customers in the line.
Customers started lining up before the store opened.
“I ordered the maximum quantity I could, and we have never done this before,” owner Nancy Savage said, crediting her team for thinking of turning a portion of the toy store into a bakery-themed pop-up.
“That was totally their idea, and it has been so much fun.”
The concept is similar to one of Jellycat’s latest retailers, which hosts a Jellycat Diner in midtown Manhattan.
Oh My Cupcakes in Sioux Falls provided bakery apparel for the team to wear at the event.
“It’s just so much fun, the collaboration,” Savage said.
Her store has carried Jellycat for years, but it recently has gained even more popularity as nostalgic teens and young adults return to toys from their childhood.
“It’s very collectible, and it’s so unique,” Savage said. “The pieces are softer than anything you’ll find anywhere.”
She continues to receive monthly shipments but also directs customers to Simply Perfect and Zandbroz Variety downtown, which also carry Jellycat.
