Man accused of ‘strangulating’ officer during traffic stop in Hopkinsville

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (WKRN) — A man is facing multiple charges—including attempted murder of an officer—after a traffic stop reportedly turned violent in Hopkinsville Wednesday.

The Hopkinsville Police Department said an officer noticed a motorcycle passing a vehicle on the right side of the shoulder at Old Clarksville Pike and Fort Campbell Boulevard on Wednesday, March 12. As a result, the officer initiated a traffic stop near mile marker 7 on Pennyrile Parkway.

The officer made contact with the driver, 43-year-old Carlo Jones of Hopkinsville, who “became extremely argumentative and advised that he did not need to provide his driver’s license,” authorities said.

When the officer tried to detain Jones, he reportedly pulled away and pushed the officer. Then, Jones ran toward the officer and bear-hugged him, causing both Jones and the officer to fall over the guardrail, down toward an embankment near water, according to police.

After that, officials said Jones “mounted the officer and began strangulating the officer to the point of almost losing consciousness.”

WKDZ Radio said the officer was taken to the hospital for treatment, but there is no word on the nature of his injuries.

Meanwhile, Jones was charged with attempted murder of a first responder (peace officer), resisting arrest, menacing, and improper passing, according to law enforcement.

No additional details have been released about this incident.
