Jefferson Parish prepares for possible severe weather

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Jefferson Parish is preparing for potential severe weather, which is expected to have its greatest impact on Saturday, March 15.

Parish officials say Jefferson Parish will be at a rare, moderate, level 4 out of 5 risk for severe weather on Saturday, with damaging winds up to 60-80 mph, large hail and strong or long-tracked tornadoes possible.

In response, residents are asked to secure loose objects, and during the severe weather, stay inside and away from windows. Additionally, things like chairs, tarps and tents shouldn’t be on the Metairie Road parade route ahead of Sunday’s festivities.

In the event of a tornado, the Terrytown Playground, located at 641 Heritage Ave., in Terrytown, will be open on Saturday as a shelter for people and pets, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those seeking shelter should bring their own food and water, as well as carriers for their pets.

Residents are also encouraged to clear debris in their streets and around drains to reduce the chance of flooding. Streets under bridges and overpasses will be especially prone to flooding, so drivers should use caution in those areas. Driving on flooded streets is prohibited by a parish ordinance, as the wake caused by vehicles could push water into off-street structures.

Transit services are planned to continue according to schedule, but if winds raise to over 35 mph, they will cease across the Crescent City Connection, bridges and overpasses until the winds die down.

To receive weather alerts, maintain access to TV, radio and mobile devices. You can also receive emergency alerts from Jefferson Parish by texting JPALERT or JPNOTICIAS to 888-777.
