Although the victim was found dead in an alley, police believe the murder likely took place at another location. While the motive remains unclear, police were able to arrest the accused killer in part due to the public’s help.
A cross and small memorial in an alley near 10th and Somerset is where a 38-year-old Peruvian man identified as Pedro Mozombite was found dead after being shot in the neck in late February.
“It’s upsetting, but not shocking,” said neighbor Roberta Howard.
Some neighbors like Howard reported hearing a commotion in the alley, but that by itself was not unusual for the neighborhood.
“Because there’s always either gunshots going off or there’s fireworks going off and so you get to the point where you just ignore it,” said Howard.
Still, after the shooting, police canvassed the entire neighborhood for several days.
Eventually, multiple neighbors shared surveillance video and reported seeing a tan Honda CRV flee the scene.
That Honda was found set on fire just over a mile away from the alley, but police used the getaway car to track down the accused killer, 47-year-old Alfred Armour.
On Wednesday, IMPD Violent Crimes Unit detectives located Armour near the 1000 block of Centennial Street. With assistance from the Indiana State Police SWAT team, he was taken into custody without incident.
“It just highlights the hard work our officers and detectives continue to do,” said IMPD officer Tommy Thompson. “They never give up.”
According to the initial affidavit, the suspect claimed the Honda belonged to his sister and insisted it had been stolen before the shooting.
While a reason for the violence was never given, police believe Armour is responsible for the murder and thanked the community for their assistance.
“That’s a huge part right, people coming forward and working with us,” Thompson said. “It takes both of us working together to solve these crimes and bring some justice to the victims and their families.”
The suspect is now being held without bond pending the filing of formal charges. That decision is up to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
