The family of Josef Lewis, the man who was murdered in Iberia Parish on Mardi Gras night, spoke with KLFY about the fateful night and how they are encouraging others to help them out in finding whoever is responsible.
“We just want the people to know who he is,” said Ivan Lewis, Lewis’s father.
Lewis graduated from Acadiana High school in May 2024. He pursued a career in welding and being mentored to be an active member of the work force.
On the night of the shooting, Lewis’s family said they saw him leave the house around 8:00 at night which was a normal thing.
That’s not out of the norm, said Cheryl Lewis, Lewis’s mother. “He has friends, lots of friends. It’s not uncommon for him to go hang out for a little while and come on back.”
Cheryl went to bed then woke up in the middle of the night. She realized Josef did not come home. Knowing she had work the next morning, she still stayed up all night worried. She went to work but knew something was not right.
She said, “I’m getting sicker and sicker as the day goes. My stomach was killing me, killing me, killing me. I just didn’t feel right.”
Her motherly instincts kicked in, so she went to the Scott Police Department to report her son was possibly missing.
Just after 6:30 p.m., police showed up to Lewis’s house to break the news. Ivan was the only one home.
He said, “First thing that I say is, ‘Where’s Joe?’ and he says, ‘We’re sorry to inform you that your son is dead.'”
Both Ivan and Cheryl are giving credit to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office for their efforts investigating their son’s killing. His parents want the world to know who Josef was and make sure he will not be remembered in vain.
“They are doing their thing,” said Ivan. “We just want to put a face to what happened. He’s because he’s not, you know, john doe. He’s pastor Ivan James Lewis’s son and first lady Cheryl Lewis.”
