With this expected severe weather, many event organizers are keeping safety top of mind. As of right now, some St Patrick’s Day celebrations are continuing as planned, but their organizers say weather plans are in place.
“Safety is the number one priority at this bar,” Innisfree Irish Pub General Manager Dane Trelles said. “I want people to come here, when they do come here, and feel safe and to have fun, and to leave here with good memories that they talk about forever.”
For Innisfree Irish Pub, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations take months of planning.
“We’ll have Irish River Dancers, we will have bag pipers coming through here, we will have live music then DJ late night. We will also be serving food,” Trelles said.
With all of the time spent prepping an event, weather can come in and throw a wrench in those plans.
“If an act that we scheduled says, ‘It’s not safe, we don’t want to be on the roads,’ we’ll cancel it. That’s not a problem, that’s not an argument from me, we’ll just kind of roll with the punches,” said Trelles. “The forecast is monitored literally by the minute while we’re here. I actually have a guy, actually have boots on the ground, who’s following the storm as it comes to us. So, like I said, we take it very seriously.”
Trelles says, because 90% of the pub is indoors, he’s not worried about rain. However, should tornadic activity pop up, a plan is in place to keep customers and staff safe.
“If we were inside the polygon, we have a place for everyone to be in shelter and whoever is here, they have a place to go and feel safe,” he said. “We obviously have hallways and bathrooms and stuff like that with no windows. We’ve also, our neighbor Nana Funks, has offered to accommodate extra room as well so if we have anyone on the patio, we can have them go to next door.”
Rain also isn’t a worry for Ace Graham, coordinator of the St. Patty’s Day Southside 5K race.
“Our best runs are in the rain,” Graham said. “The crisp, clean air that you get, the cooled off temperature, it’s just the best thing to do to run in the rain.”
Graham says if it looks like strong winds or possible tornadoes could impact the race, they would look at pushing it to another day. Graham says several hundred people have signed up to run and keeping them safe while fostering community is the goal.
“As we were going through tough times in Five Points, we were still running. We were always out here, multicultural people still occupying the streets at night and we never wanted to change that. So, when we had the opportunity to put something together officially with the St Patrick’s Day Parade, it was like a no brainer for us,” said Graham.
As the events get closer and the forecast solidifies, these events will be keeping people up to date on their respective social media pages.
