CHICAGO — New videos and documents detailing a deadly shooting involving Chicago police and a burglary suspect on the city’s Southwest Side last month have been released by Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA).
On Wednesday, COPA announced that it was releasing video and other materials related to the shooting, which unfolded at around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, in the 1800 block of South Central Park Avenue in North Lawndale.
The newly released videos show the moments leading up to the shooting that left the suspect dead.
Alongside the videos, COPA also released several documents and 911 call audio related to the incident.
According to COPA, officers were initially called to the scene following a burglary-in-progress call in the area. When police arrived, they encountered an individual running from a nearby building.
Officials said the responding officers began to chase the suspect, but a shootout broke out between them and five officers.
Amid the shootout, the suspect was struck by gunfire. They were later taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, a gun was recovered on the scene.
Wednesday’s new videos show the incident from several different angles, including from police body cameras and dashcams.
None of the officers involved in the incident were struck in the shootout and all five were placed on 30-day administrative leave, in accordance with department policy.
Authorities have not identified the individual killed.
