St. Bernard Prep AP Biology students explore cancer genetics at HudsonAlpha

CULLMAN, Ala. – Under the guidance of instructor Connie Briehn, Advanced Placement (AP) Biology students from St. Bernard Preparatory School recently participated in an immersive, lab-based experience at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in  Huntsville — investigating the genetics of cancer.

During the visit, students explored the genetic roots of cancer, distinguishing between hereditary and non-hereditary forms of the disease. Using the Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC) kit, students traced a cancer-related mutation through a family, analyzed medical histories to create pedigrees and selected likely candidates for genetic testing. Employing gel electrophoresis, they identified family members carrying the cancer-linked mutation.

Beyond hands-on laboratory work, students engaged in thought-provoking discussions on the ethical challenges surrounding genetic testing and its implications. The visit also included a guided tour of HudsonAlpha’s state-of-the-art campus, providing students with insight into the cutting-edge research and innovations taking place within the field of biotechnology.

HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, a nonprofit organization established in 2008, is dedicated to advancing genomic technology and research to address biological and medical challenges. Located in Huntsville’s Cummings Research Park — the second-largest research park in the nation — HudsonAlpha fosters collaboration among scientists, educators and entrepreneurs to drive breakthroughs in genetics, individualized medicine and sustainable energy solutions.

Students left the experience with a deeper understanding of the role genetics plays in human health and the evolving field of biotechnology.
