Ryan mulls tax on skill games

BARNESVILLE – Another municipality in northern Schuylkill County is mulling a tax on skill games.

Ryan Township discussed the matter at Monday night’s regular township meeting. It was previously discussed at last month’s meeting as well.

Solicitor Christopher Riedlinger outlined the law to the township supervisors.

He said that the township can, for example, tax coin operated pool tables or skill game machines. Those can be taxed at 5% of gross receipts.

Many municipalities, he said, tax annually instead.

Shenandoah and West Mahanoy Township both levy an annual tax on skill game machines of $250.

Riedlinger cautioned that they may soon be taxed at the state level, which would remove the ability for local municipalities to levy the same tax.

Supervisors took no action on the matter at the meeting.

Garbage Bills

In other business, township supervisors warned that they will be taking action on delinquent garbage bills.

Supervisors Vice-Chair Clyde ‘Champ’ Holman said “it is not fair to these people who have been paying over the years.”

“We’re going after people with whatever we possibly can within the law,” Holman said. Those with delinquent bills will first be contacted by the township solicitor and have an opportunity to catch up before court action.

In other business, township supervisors approved:

  • resolutions related to a park grant application;
  • a letter of support for an upcoming Enduro Riders race.
