Police: Rockford man attempted to disarm officer at UW Health

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police arrested Barry Barr, 35, for attempting to disarm an officer after being removed from a hospital for trespassing, according to court documents.

On March 11, around 1 p.m., officers responded to UW Health Swedish American Hospital on East State Street for reports of a man who was refusing to leave the emergency room.

A nurse told authorities Barr was brought in for erratic behavior but refused further treatment. When he was medically cleared, he refused to leave, according to court records.

Officers found Barr lying on the floor and refused to stand up, so police put him in a wheelchair to roll him out of the hospital.

Authorities put the suspect in handcuffs, which resulted in him grabbing an officer’s gun, according to court documents. He was unable to remove the firearm from the officer’s holster, police reported.

Barr is charged with criminal trespassing, resisting an officer and attempting to disarm an officer.
