GXO Logistics is one of the largest third party logistic companies in the world with operations established in nearly 30 different countries including in Boone County. Just this week, the company announced an $11 million dollar expansion at its Lebanon facility beginning this spring.
“We are currently the fastest growing county in the state of Indiana,” said Jessica Schwarz, the vice president of economic development at the Boone County Economic Development Corporation. “We are fortunate to be able to ride this wave and this opportunity that we have here locally.”
In a recently released press release, Mayor Matt Gentry with the City of Lebanon shared his excitement about the expansion.
“This expansion is a testament to Lebanon’s proven strength as a logistics and manufacturing hub,” said Mayor Gentry. “The addition of over 400 quality jobs will provide more opportunities for our residents and demonstrates the continued commitment from businesses like GXO to invest in our city’s future.”
It is important to note that this is not an expansion that can be seen from the outside but directly within the walls of the facility itself.
“This is not an expansion from a size of the building per se but more of an expansion in anticipation of future partnerships that they are going to have and the growth they may have as a company to be able to provide more equipment to meet the needs of their clients and also build out their staff as they continue to grow,” Schwarz said.
GXO is already one of the largest employers in Lebanon and, as the mayor said, this expansion could bring in more than 400 new full-time jobs to the area.
“This will mostly be returns and fulfillment jobs,” Schwarz said. “GXO meets the living wage here in Boone County. We have a living wage of about $22 an hour. They pay on average about $23 an hour and that ranges up to $43 depending on the position. “
Additionally, GXO is a second chance employer in Boone County. That means the company is open to offering jobs to some people with criminal histories, giving them that second chance they may be looking for.
“We have worked with the probation office here locally to create a second chance employment program and they are a second chance employer,” Schwarz said.
As things slowly get underway with this expansion, the Boone County Economic Development Corporation is expecting a significant impact on the local economy.
“We are thrilled for the opportunities that are happening here locally,” Schwarz said. “It is certainly a representation of coming alongside our community, our elected officials, and also both the businesses looking to come here locally and also ones that operate here locally and supporting their expansions. But also getting the word out that Boone County and Lebanon and our other communities are also open for business.”
Additionally, the Lebanon City Council just approved a four-year personal property tax abatement at 50% for the company.
“We have the ability to drop the tax dollars that a company would pay through tax abatements and then they save money long term over taxes that are paid and that’s part of incentivizing them to be a part of the community and it builds on their success,” Schwarz said. “It’s a win-win for the community and the company as well.”
Again, things will get underway this spring with an anticipated completion in 2029.
