The Fresno County resident has potentially exposed residents in Madera County, according to the Fresno County Department of Public Health. Health departments from both counties are working to investigate the case, identify potential exposures, and implement preventative measures.
Health officials add that the risk to the general public remains low, as most people are protected through their childhood MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccination. However, due to how contagious measles is, health officials in both Fresno County and Madera County ask anyone who may have been exposed to monitor their symptoms.
The measles case confirmed in Fresno County comes after an outbreak in West Texas which has already claimed the life of an unvaccinated child – the first measles death in the U.S. since 2015.
