Woman’s Hospital counts down to milestone baby delivery

Woman’s Hospital counts down to milestone baby delivery
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) – The Woman’s Hospital Labor of Love Campaign countdown to their milestone baby arrival is on.

The medical system is awaiting the arrival of its 400,000th baby. As of Tuesday morning, the birth counter shows 399,883 babies delivered. Medical staff expect the delivery to happen within the next six to 10 days.

“We deliver around 8,000 babies per year. Our highest number we’ve had on a given day is 45 babies, but our average on a typical day is around 20,” said Wendy Singleton, Vice President of Nursing.

The Baton Rouge hospital is a specialty hospital for women and infants. Since opening in 1968, it has welcomed nearly 400,000 babies, making it one of the largest delivery services in the country and the largest in Louisiana.

“We have a very large delivery service,” said Singleton. “We also do a lot of surgeries on women. Our most recent addition is our perinatal mental health unit, which opened in September. It’s a specialized unit that takes care of women who are pregnant and in the first year of post-partum who are suffering with mental illness.”

Woman’s Hospital is a nonprofit organization. All money brought into the system is reinvested into hospital programs, community services, and highly qualified staff.

“We really take pride in giving the very best, most individualized care to our women, our infants, and our families,” said Singleton.

During the countdown, families are encouraged to engage on their social media pages and participate in trivia questions.

Once the 400,000th baby arrives, the hospital will do something special to honor the family, if consent is given.
