On March 7, Utah County deputies responded to a home in the Pioneer Landing area of Eagle Mountain, Utah, on a report of an infant that was not breathing. First responders arrived at the scene and provided life-saving care, but the infant was pronounced deceased on scene.
Deputies observed “concerning signs of possible neglect” at the scene, a press release from the sheriff’s office states. The mother reportedly agreed to speak with police, and upon being interviewed, admitted to drinking “a large amount of alcohol” before taking a bath on the evening of March 6.
The woman told police she had a history of falling asleep in the bath for hours, according to the release. She reportedly admitted to bringing the infant child into bathroom with her and placing them on a bouncy chair next to the tub.
She stated that during her bath, she picked up the infant and placed them on her lap in the tub, “just above the water line,” the release states. The mother then woke up around two hours later by another one of her young children, who was “concerned about the victim being face down in the bath water and partially under [the mother’s] knee,” the release states.
The mother picked up the infant, who was not breathing, while the other child reportedly ran to get help from other family members.
The woman was booked into Utah County Jail for negligent homicide, among other charges. No further information is available at this time.
