Bucks County family counselor accused of secretly recording patients and staff in bathroom

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. (WPHL) — The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office announced the arrest of a family counselor who is accused of secretly recording patients and staff. Authorities allege Jonathan Moyer, 54, placed hidden cameras disguised as charging blocks in the bathroom of his Quakertown practice. According to the DA’s office, Moyer worked as a counselor for Empower Life Coaching & Counseling at their locations in Quakertown and in Bally, Berks County.

Moyer was arrested on March 6 and charged with one count each of interception of oral communications, possession of a device for interception of oral communications, possession of an instrument of crime, and six counts of invasion of privacy.

According to officials, the investigation developed quickly after a detective with the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office received a tip on March 3. The tip alleges someone found a microSD card that contained video of a man, later identified as Moyer, setting up a recording device in his Quakertown office. The device also had several other videos that showed females using the bathroom.

The following day on March 4, detectives with the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office and the Quakertown Police Department spoke to the witness who found the microSD card, and confirmed the tip to law enforcement. The camera appeared to be concealed directly across from the toilet. Detectives confirmed the storage device’s contents, which had videos of several females using the toilet. Investigators believe the people in the videos did not know they were being recorded.

Later that afternoon, investigators conducted three simultaneous search warrants: two at Moyer’s offices in Berks County and Quakertown and one at his home in Alburtis, Lehigh County.

When detectives contacted Moyer at the Quakertown office, he attempted to use the bathroom but was denied. Police found a black charging block and a key fob disguised as a camera with a microSD in Moyer’s possession. Inside the bathroom, police found a hidden camera disguised as a black USB charging block plugged into the outlet underneath the bathroom sink and directly across from the toilet.

In Alburtis, police seized several items from Moyer’s basement including numerous covert charging block cameras like the one found in the Quakertown office bathroom, a covert key fob camera like the one Moyer had in his possession, covert pens, and microSD cards and media storage devices.

Authorities believe there are four separate victims who were recorded in secret, but believe there will be more victims as the case progresses. Investigators have been in contact with the Bucks County Network of Victim Assistance (NOVA) and anyone who needs their assistance should call them at 800-675-6900.
