As the City of Abilene considers a potential new dog ordinance, a local organization, All Kind Animal Initiative, is taking steps to address the increasing cat population. They have implemented a program known as the Community Cat Program. Program Coordinator Mikaela Davis shared details on how it operates.
“It’s a T.N.R. program, which just stands for Trap, Neuter, and Return. So, it’s basically what we do. We go out into the community, we trap the cats, or you’re more than welcome to bring them here. Then we take them to the vet, where they get fixed and vaccinated, and then ear tips to signify that they’ve been fixed. And then we re-release them back to their original location,” Davis explained.
Davis mentioned that the program has received more calls, leading All Kind to expand their hours for retrieving and caring for stray cats. She emphasized that this approach provides a positive solution for people who wish to keep the animals in their community rather than resorting to euthanasia.
“A lot of people are feeding, and they’re like, ‘I want to provide a safe space for these cats. I want to care for them, but I just don’t want them to keep reproducing.’ That’s exactly why we’re here. The program is free, so it doesn’t cost you anything because we know they’re not your technically owned pets,” Davis added.
Anyone in the community who is seeking information about a stray cat in their neighborhood is urged to call the All Kind Animal Initiative to schedule an appointment. Citizens can bring the cat in themselves, or if someone cannot, they can request that All Kind pick up the animal for treatment.
