Winnebago County jury finds Meovonte Cooper guilty of shooting sleeping victim

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A Winnebago County jury has found Meovonte Cooper, 22, guilty of attempted murder for shooting a 21-year-old man in the back while he was sleeping.

According to the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office, around 4:30 a.m. on August 24th, 2024, Cooper drove to the victim’s apartment in the 1000 block of Minns Drive, in Machesney Park.

He then climbed up on his vehicle’s roof to reach a second-floor balcony, and then fired multiple shots through the window, hitting the victim who was sleeping on a couch inside the apartment.

A Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputy, who heard the shooting, saw a vehicle leaving the area and stopped Cooper’s car. Police said a Glock 9mm handgun was found on the floorboard in the passenger area.

Cooper was found guilty of Attempted First Degree Murder and Aggravated Battery with a Firearm.

He faces a sentence of up to 30 years in prison and a mandatory 20-year sentence for the use of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 16th, 2025.
