Vandebilt Catholic beats Madison Prep 46-42, wins Division II Select Championship

HAMMOND (WGNO) – Vandebilt Catholic reached the state championship for the first time in 15 years. 2010 was the last time the school reached the championship game.

The Terriers of old beat Jennings 70-51 and claimed the Class 4A State title, but for Vandebilt to bring home a long awaited second ring, the Terriers would have to get past a school making its second-straight championship game appearance: Madison prep.

The Division II Select state championship started in Vandebilt’s favor. The Terriers outscored the Chargers 27-20 in the first half, but Madison Prep stormed back in the second: rallying off a 6-0 run at the start of the third quarter.

The back-and-forth affair began, and the Terriers trailed for the first time all game, when Madison Prep scored an and-1 layup to take a 32-31 lead.

However, the Terriers fought back in the fourth. Most Outstanding Player Makayla Charles scored two of her game-high 14 points to tie the game at 39-39 with five minutes left in the game, and with another tie at 42-42, Tyanna Stewart banked in the go-ahead layup.
