Baker resident Valeka Matthews had fun at the event with her friends. They liked staying active together.
“This was such a beautiful day. The rain held up, the weather was nice and so was the atmosphere. Hanging out with my friends, dancing together, encouraging each other to keep going if someone was slowing down – it was all good,” Matthews said.
Delta Sigma Theta alum Monica McDaniel emphasized the event’s mission to promote health and well-being within the community.
“This is a feather in our cap for the Sigma Alumnae chapter. It’s one of our signature programs – promoting physical and mental health. People need to feel safe—fear is paralyzing. So, we’re creating a safe space for an open-air event,” McDaniel said.
The races began and ended at Southern University’s field house, right by Mumford Stadium.
“It may seem like a small thing – walking – but it means a lot. It’s a good thing to just be able to be out here and not have to go far. So many come from all over, but this is really good to have close to home,” Matthews said.
Proceeds from the event will benefit several charities, including The Butterfly Society, Ainsley’s Angels, and Southern University’s Lab School.
