PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Highway 99W in Sherwood has reopened ahead of schedule Saturday night after officials anticipated a full weekend closure for the installation of a new pedestrian bridge.

The closure began 9 p.m. Friday, affecting the highway between Southwest Edy Road and Southwest Sunset Boulevard.

While the closure was expected to last until 5 a.m. Monday, crews completed installation of the bridge span earlier than expected.

City officials say the 900-foot bridge will span over the highway, connecting Sherwood High School and the YMCA, improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The city adds that three full-weekend road closures will be needed between now and May to complete all spans of the bridge, which is set to open this fall.
